THE WISHBONE

/BY Hsiao-Ching

Cutting open the chicken, I bumped into the wishbone. This funny looking V shaped bone stared at me with emotion. Should I save it for Lori? Maybe Corin should get it this time. But that would be unfair to Bobby who isn't home right now.

As I thought how silly I was in spending so much time deciding who would get the bone, I was tempted to throw it away, but couldn't. Each time while cutting the chicken, I struggled between cleaning the bone off, keeping it to make a wish or just putting it down the sink disposal. I finally decided to leave it to the side before condemning it to its final death.

Looking at this small bone, I began to laugh at myself for keeping it. No one would know, no one would wonder where the wishbone went when they ate their chicken dinner that night. All my kids are grown, what do they care?

Now, when they were little, I had to buy several chickens just to keep all three happy. You see, they would notice and ask each time we had chicken for a meal. "Mom, who gets the wishbone this time?" "Dad, where is the bone?" "You didn't throw it out again did you?" I didn't dare throw it out, but Dad would sometimes forget the importance of the wish. Thus, I learned to always buy extra chickens, or rotate the wish among the kids.

Now as I look at the bone, lying on the edge of my sink, I felt sad because no one wanted to wish anymore. It seems that as we grow up and get busy, we forget our wishes. Or maybe it is because we don't believe in them anymore. Life seems to have given us so many curses that our imaginations, our dreams are too far to reclaim.

Yes, just as the chicken, the wish is there. Your wish can come true if you would take the time to stop, cut open the meat, and look for it.

God wants us to dream. He created us to imagine the impossible. He gave us the curiosity, the desire to wish. The Bible says not only does it please Him to give us the desires of our hearts, but also He promises it to us.

If you feel like your life is mundane, the same day in and day out, search and you will find the real life God has in stored for you. If you feel trapped in the same old life, you can do something about it. Open your Bible, search for the excitement, ask for the impossible God will gladly give it to you. In James chapter 4, the Bible says, "You do not have because you do not ask God".

Just like the chicken, return and be a child again. God's word is there, but you must cut it open and digest it. Inside you will find your wishbone. Don't be too busy to look, don't be too proud to ask Him, "Can I make my wish?" Because with God he has a wishbone ready for you, you don't have to rotate your wishes, and buy extra chickens.
