Perspective Redefined

/by Sharon Yeung

Born wearing rose-tinted lenses.

Parents can do no wrong,
Everyone is my friend.

Amidst hosannas and palm branches,
The sky is the limit.

Then I tasted bitter reality.

Failure shakes confidence,
Futility undermines initiative.

Disease overwhelms the will to live.
Bereavement evokes regret.

Pain cuts to the core,
Disappointment withdraws trust.

Brokenness avoids reconciliation,
Sorrow cannot find consolation.

Perplexity yearns for resolution,
Despair defies hope.

On the road to Emmaus,
The glass is half-empty.

The spiral goes down,
down,
down,
down to the cross.

Down to the holy Love that endured righteous wrath,
Down to the humble obedience of the sinless Servant,
Down to the grace offered through vicarious sacrifice.

Down to the victory achieved in surrender,
Down to the power made perfect in weakness,
Down to the hope produced in suffering.

And then up to the promise of eternal glory through faith.
