"Remember My Husband, O Lord"

/Clement Yeung

Remember my husband, O Lord!
This year is our golden anniversary.
I am alone at home, while he is in the hospital
Under the care of a psychiatrist.

You know how happy we were when we first met,
Convinced that You had brought us together.
We dedicated our lives and family to You.
Thank You for our now grown-up children.

You know the intense struggle we had
When we first heard Your call to go
Overseas as Your representatives,
To serve with our hearts and our skills.

You know how hard we both laboured there?

He as the lonely missionary doctor,
Me as his only support and nurse,
No holidays, no breaks.

Patients blind and lost,
He restored sight to many,
And prayed for their spiritual vision
No wonder they nicknamed him "Jesus".

Then we had to leave the mission field,
Reluctant, puzzled, broken-hearted.
Because of the uncontrollable seizures of our son.
With tears we waved goodbye to all our friends.

You know part of us was left behind.
Spring, fall, whenever possible,
We went back to help.
It felt more like going home.

Then one day he had a stroke.
Not paralyzed but drastically changed?
Agitated, forgetful, demanding,
Not the person I used to know.

Remember my husband, O Lord!
I can hardly recognize him in the hospital,
Inept, unkempt, unsure,
Still talking about his patients and friends.

Take this cup away from us.
But teach us the Gethsemane prayer?
"Not our will but Yours be done."
Bless us not with answers but with Your presence.
(Post script: The missionsdary doctor made a dramatic recovery shortly after this was written.)
